CALL TO ACTION FOR WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30, 2008!!!
CAN'T COME TO WASHINGTON FOR THE LEGISLATIVE CONFERENCE?
YOU CAN STILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
CALL YOUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 30 AT 1-866-924-NAHB (6242) AND TELL THEM TO PASS BADLY NEEDED HOUSING LEGISLATION!
On Wednesday, April 30, 2008, many of you will come to Washington, DC, for the 2008 Legislative Conference to meet with your federal legislators on Capitol Hill. For those of you who cannot make the trip to Washington, we still need your help to magnify the message your fellow builders will deliver next week. Please call your federal lawmakers on Wednesday with a simple message: the housing industry and the national economy are in trouble and we need quick action by the Congress.
Congress must act now! They must not allow any controversial provisions to delay or derail the housing bill. There are key provisions that need to be included in housing legislation that is currently being considered by Congress:
- Home Buyer Tax Credit: A home buyer tax credit will stimulate home buying. This will reduce excess supply in housing markets, and most importantly, halt the dangerous erosion of house prices and mortgage credit quality. The top priority for the Congress must be to implement a home buyer tax credit to stabilize the housing market.
- Federal Housing Administration (FHA) Reform: Given the current chaos and stagnation in the credit markets, one of the ways to get mortgage money flowing again is to enact FHA reform. A revitalized FHA will be well positioned to provide reasonably-priced, low-downpayment mortgage solutions to millions of home owners and potential home buyers.
- Mortgage Revenue Bond Program: A special allocation of mortgage revenue bonds used for either purchase or refinancing would allow the program to have the largest effect, particularly for communities experiencing the possibility of a wave of foreclosures or an extreme excess of inventory.
- Net Operating Loss Carryback: For home builders large and small, the ability to claim and carry back net operating losses (NOL) to years when significant taxes were paid will relieve the pressure to either increase high-cost borrowing or further liquidate land, which will only compound the existing inventory problem.
It is imperative that you place your call on Wednesday, April 30, 2008, so we can deliver a powerful, unified message to Capitol Hill.
CALL TO ACTION
Please take a moment to call the NAHB Legislative Hotline, at 1-866-924-NAHB (6242), and get connected, free-of-charge, to Capitol Hill.
- When you call the NAHB Legislative Hotline, you will hear a brief message outlining the message we need to deliver to Capitol Hill.
- You will be asked to enter your zip code, and then you will be connected to your lawmaker's office. Important: Please stay on the line between calls as the system works to patch you through to each of your senators' and representative's offices.
- Tell them who you are, where you are calling from and your connection to the housing industry (legislative offices want to know they are talking to constituents).
- Inform them that you are calling on behalf of the National Association of Home Builders.
- Tell your lawmakers:
- Work quickly to pass legislation to prevent an economic crisis.
- Oppose any proposals that could derail this legislation.
- Support a tax credit for the purchase of a home.
- Support FHA Reform.
- Support expansion of the mortgage revenue bond program.
- Support a net operating loss carryback (NOL) provision.
